In class we discussed many different addictions and I remember explaining how before substance abuse (drugs, alcohol and the likes) where the only types of addiction we used to hear about.
It is very interesting how the idea of what constitutes as and addiction has shifted the more we now about the brain. People who are addicted to shopping, or gambling, or the internet, experience the same rush as people who are addicted to substances, and the treatment always tries to determine the cause of the addiction. Addiction almost always starts as a coping mechanism that blows out of proportion. But, why?
Lately I've been reading a lot about how the United States is going through a prescription drug crisis. Painkillers mostly, and it made me think of how much more we need to understand about the human experience and how much more kind and helpful we should aspire to be with one another.
I found this link in the American Psychiatric Association that talks a bit more about substance abuse.
