Unit 3 The Bold and the Bashful
The words bold and bashful were not including in my vocabulary until I sow this unit. When the Professor introduced the topic he said that bold is synonym of gregarious, and bashful means shy.
My shyness has to do with the places I could be in and also with the people who I have to talk to; If I feel confidence I can share with friends without any problem. When I don't know well the people I avoid being bold because I could be inappropriate or impolite.
Some words and phrases about background and vocabulary I didn't know or I was not clear about:
- Reticent: unwilling to talk.
- Adverse: negative.
- Kindred souls: people having similar traits.
- Misattributions: false assumptions.
- Handicap: disadvantage.
- Aloof: distant (not physical)
- Condescending: treating others as inferior.
I was surprised about the listening, Professor Philip Zimbardo had explained in a interview about Americans shyness:
- 40% of Americans label themselves as shy.
- Shyness drives people having less sex.
- Shyness has to do with the electronic revolution: people's job replaced by computer.
In this unit I also could find out that I am shyer than I used to think.
